Behind the Lens: Manta Rays in Isla Mujeres’ Whale Shark Migration

Every year, the waters off Isla Mujeres transform into a feeding frenzy as whale sharks gather in numbers that seem almost unreal. But every so often, something even rarer happens—the manta rays arrive.

Mantas are unpredictable. Some seasons, they don’t show up at all. Other times, we might see just one or two over the course of a week. But then, there are those magical seasons when they appear in force—sometimes even outnumbering the whale sharks. When that happens, it feels like stepping into a dream.

Photographing manta rays in this setting is no easy task. The right light, the right position, and most importantly, the right manta—one that’s comfortable enough to let you in close—are all key to capturing a truly special shot. But when everything comes together, when the ocean gifts you that perfect moment, you can freeze poetry in motion.
