When You Travel The World... You Find What You're Looking For

One of the most common questions I get asked before an expedition is:

"Is it safe?"

The destination changes.

Sometimes it's Mexico.

Sometimes it's Brazil.

Sometimes it's Mongolia, South Africa, or the Bahamas.

But the question is always the same.

Is it safe to travel there?

And after more than twenty-three years of traveling the world, my answer is usually the same.

Yes of course it is, we wouldn’t be going there if it wasn’t.

But… you find what you're looking for.

Now let me be clear. Bad things happen. Crime exists. Common sense matters. There are places in every country that are best avoided.

But most people asking this question aren't really asking about crime statistics.

They're asking if the locations we are visiting are dangerous.

The truth is this.

If you're looking for trouble, you’re probably going to find it.

If you're wandering unfamiliar cities at three in the morning, looking for the next bar, the next party, or the next bad decision, eventually trouble has a way of introducing itself.

The world has never struggled to provide opportunities for poor choices.

But that's not what I'm looking for.

When I travel, I'm looking for wildlife.

I'm looking for stories.

I'm looking for beautiful landscapes, local restaurants, small villages, and conversations with people whose lives are completely different from my own.

And what I continue to find, over and over again, are good people.

That doesn't mean I travel carelessly.

In fact, I do the opposite.

I protect my camera gear and personal belongings. I pay attention to my surroundings. I lock valuables away when appropriate. I avoid putting myself into situations that don't make sense, and I've never been much of a fan of wandering large cities, especially at night.

Wherever I travel, I try to remain aware.

Awareness and fear are not the same thing.

Being aware doesn't mean you distrust people. It doesn't mean you assume the worst about a destination. It simply means you understand that personal responsibility travels with you.

I don't let my guard down because I'm in Mexico.

I don't let my guard down because I'm in Brazil.

I don't let my guard down because I'm in Mongolia.

And I don't let my guard down when I'm at home.

Awareness is a habit, not a reaction.

Ironically, I think this mindset is one of the reasons my experiences around the world have been so positive. I don't travel in fear, but I don't travel blindly either.

I pay attention.

Then I focus on the things I came to find.

Over the years I've sat at dinner tables in remote villages.

I've shared boats with fishermen.

I've been welcomed into homes, communities, and cultures all over the world.

I've met people who had every reason to ignore a stranger and instead chose to help.

I've watched guides work tirelessly to give guests the experience of a lifetime.

I've seen kindness expressed in languages I couldn't understand.

What I've discovered is that most people are simply trying to live their lives, take care of their families, and find happiness wherever they can.

They're not much different than you and me.

Many of the places we visit on expedition are small communities built around wildlife and tourism.

These aren't places filled with people looking for trouble.

They're places filled with people who are proud of their homes and excited to share them with visitors.

And that's exactly what I find.

Magic.

Not because the world is perfect.

Not because danger doesn't exist.

But because I believe travel works a lot like life.

If you spend your days looking for reasons to be afraid, you'll find plenty.

If you spend your days looking for reasons to be angry, you'll find those too.

But if you look for kindness, generosity, beauty, adventure, and connection, you'll find those as well.

The world tends to reveal what we're paying attention to.

After more than twenty-three years on the road, my memories are filled with whale sharks, jaguars, sperm whales, brown bears, snow leopards, and countless acts of kindness from complete strangers.

Those are the things I was searching for.

And those are the things I found.

Because in my experience, the world is far kinder, more welcoming, and more beautiful than most people imagine.

So when people ask me if a destination is safe, I usually smile.

Then I tell them the truth.

Of course it is!

🎥 Introducing The Wild Minute… The Wild in Motion

There are moments on our trips that can’t be shared with words alone, the sound of an orca’s breath breaking the surface, the laughter of our team on a long travel day, the quiet stillness after a storm.

The idea for The Wild Minute was born out of that space between still photos and full trip reports.

I wanted a place to share the heartbeat of what we experience out there.

They will be short, one-minute video stories from the field, raw, unfiltered, and real.

Some will be encounters with wildlife. Others are travel days, reflections, or simple slices of life between the big moments.

For years, our written blogs and daily trip reports have told the stories behind the images.

Now, The Wild Minute adds another way to share the sounds, movement, and the pulse of being there.

My hope is that it helps you feel a little closer to these places and the incredible animals that call them home.

A sample of what The Wild Minute will look and feel like.

Each clip will live on our website, connected to the stories and expeditions they came from.

So whether you prefer reading the trip reports, watching the moments unfold, or both, you can follow the journey in real time, one minute at a time. I am keeping them short so they don’t eat up too much of your time.

Our next adventure takes us north, to Churchill, Canada, where polar bears roam the edge of Hudson Bay.

That’s where Wild Minute will begin. The journey starts November 2, and so will the stories.

We’ll continue sharing our written trip reports and photos from the field, but now they’ll be complimented by short, one-minute video stories that I hope will bring you even closer to the experience.

You’ll still get the trip reports, because I love writing, but now you’ll also feel the emotion, the sound, and the pulse of the adventures as it happens.

Looking Back at 2024
Last year was filled with unforgettable moments. From swimming with orcas in Norway to capturing baitball action during the Sardine Run in Baja… we shared awe-inspiring experiences with amazing people.

Each trip reminded us of the beauty and fragility of the natural world and reinforced our commitment to conservation.

What’s Ahead for 2025
This year, we have new dreams…

We’re introducing a new destination, Brown Bears in Katmai. We are also enhancing our Youtube Channel, and finding even more ways to connect you with the incredible wildlife and ecosystems that make our planet so special.

Whether it’s swimming alongside humpback whales in Tonga, exploring remote mangroves for elusive predators, or photographing iconic marine life, 2025 promises to be packed with adventure.

We’re also doubling down on our conservation efforts, using our platform to raise awareness for endangered species and vulnerable habitats.

By sharing these stories, we aim to inspire others to cherish and protect what is left of our wild places that we love so much.

Hightlight Reel In the Works!

I am working on a new reel for our website. Well, it is a highlight reel for our recent grey whale trip. I have been procrastinating putting one together because reels take such a long time to create (at least for me. ) Some people can knock them out in a few hours.

It takes me longer than that.

I also have been pretty quiet on our website lately. I have been sharing daily on our FB and IG pages, but I have not been active on our website.

That is going to change.

I decided to begin sharing daily journals with you guys.

We are not always out in the world looking for animals.

Sadly.

We spend a lot of time at home in between trips.

During this downtime, I am constantly editing and writing, but so much of that content ends up not getting shared.

So I decided I want to share more on our website for those few who are interested in what we have to say and share.

The magic of this life is definitely out in the world looking for wildlife, but the art we create from those adventures happens while we are in the office sitting behind a computer, writing and dreaming about this wildlife world.

So expect more blog posts, because I plan to share a lot more…

Until Tomorrow!
